i totally agree with your opinion of merlin from a modern viewpoint, but that's how they treated women and people of other races back then. they're just trying to make a true-to-time-period show

sorry, but was I not being clear on why I dislike it? I repeat: Abuse of Women; Problematic representation of non-white cultures and POCs; Defending/supporting a number of unhealthy relationships.
I don’t have an ‘original post’, but I guess I’m making one right now.
On Misogyny:
Morgana/Guinevere/Ygraine/Nimueh/Morgause - Drugged, Abused, Manipulated, Betrayed, Suppressed. note: some are interchangeable. All of them acted on the defense. Most of them are the main ‘villains’ of the show. Guinevere still doesn’t know that she was enchanted while she did ‘THE BIG WRONG’. She still feels she is guilty and deserved to be punished. According to the writers, All of This is Okay.
On Racism:
Assassins/Barbarians/Evil-doers - Brown and Black people or just people with thick accents so you don’t accidentally mistake them for White English Gentlemen who are all respectable and Good.
Fans who have accepted a Talking Dragon, cannot wrap their heads around a Black Guinevere.
BBC/Shine have repeatedly excluded Angel Coulby, despite her being one of the four leads of the show, from their Merlin promotional material, including DVD covers. Adetomiwa Edun was (wow, how blatantly?) left out of a photoshoot of the knights.
Ergo, The Powers That Be only care about their White Heroes. The Distributors want to hide away the POCs. Fans are defending them left and right. Nice big happy racist family.
On Relationships:
If you believe the relationship between Arthur and Merlin (i.e. the main one of the show) is a healthy one, you’re…well, wrong. o_o
Arthur is a verbally and physically abusive man, and no amount of puppy-dog eyes and pouting can cover that up. Merlin is living in constant fear of being discovered and killed for being who he is.
The Powers That Be are not interested in ever equating this imbalance. Just as how there lies an imbalance in the relationship now between Arthur and Guinevere. According to them, one person having complete control of another and even occasionally abusing this power in a relationship is Okay.
No…more than that: It is Funny.
Merlin and Arthur also encourage each other to mistreat everyone that isn’t them: “I’d rather die than be saved by a woman” comes to mind first; Merlin also killed and prosecuted innocents/his own kind because Arthur needed to keep Uther happy. What is a moral dilemma?
Their relationship is actually destructive to the general populace.
But occasionally, one pulls down the other’s trousers in public.
So everything is Okay. Because it’s Funny.

I am so tired of women being abused, people of colour being mistreated, and homosexuality taken as a joke/fetish, continuously.

I haven’t watched any episodes after Gwen was abused and they said that that was okay. I vaguely gathered from my dash that this was followed up by some suspiciously brown/middle-eastern/indian-y people using Gwen as a sex slave because obviously they are evil, and then Gwen having to apologize to Arthur because he was in the right/she deserved to be punished. The show has always been morally questionable (see: support of genocide and suppression) but has now disintegrated to a point of no return that I refuse to support because I am brown and female, conveniently.
so…yeah. no more Merlin art from me. I’ve ended my run with propaganda for why you shouldn’t be watching it and I’ll leave it there for all to study.
Because no one should be watching this show.

This is SUPER old, and I’m actually not very pleased with how the face turned out but I wanted to post some Gwen-positive something today, so here we are. Back when I drew this I posted it as ‘possible awesome future merlin episode!’ pic. I was a very innocent hopeful child in those days.

Let’s pretend this is costume design/concept art for a movie by the same producer as ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ (basically this is the third in the series of putting legendary women in kick-ass armour).
